Analysis on Factors Related Drinking of College Freshmen

Abstract
Purpose: This study on the college freshmen in the beginning of the first semester was to investigate the characteristics of drinking, drinking knowledge, drinking attitude, and to suggest basic data for health promotion services to college students in the future.

Methods: The data were collected from the survey, in which 945 freshmen from 17 of departments in a college
were participated. Data was analyzed with ¥ö 2 test, t-test, and Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficient using SPSS/WIN 12.0 program.

Results: The rate of drinking is 91.2% of students. Male students had more positive attitudes than female. The drinking rate of parent was 54.9%, the parent permission rate for alcohol drinking was 47.1%, and 89.2% of drinking were done with companions. Frequency and amount of drinking, money for alcohol were positively related with drinking attitudes.

Conclusions: It is important that the freshmen begin to get drinking attitude under college culture. This drinking attitude will influence on the rest of and after college life. Therefore, these results will help to develope an intervention program for reducing and moderating drinking in college students.
